Remember when President Joe Biden claimed that the people being flown to the United States from Afghanistan, following his disastrous military withdrawal, were being vetted?
Well it turns out they weren’t vetted well enough. Color us surprised.
At a glance:
- Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, an Afghan man residing in Oklahoma, has been charged with plotting an ISIS-related terrorist attack on Election Day in the U.S.
- The Department of Justice (DOJ) revealed that Tawhedi allegedly attempted to provide material support to ISIS and planned to acquire firearms for the attack.
- Tawhedi faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted for conspiracy to support ISIS and up to 15 years for attempting to use a firearm in an act of terrorism.
In a significant development, the Department of Justice announced the arrest of Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, who had been living in Oklahoma. Tawhedi is accused of conspiring to carry out a terrorist attack in the U.S. on Election Day, in alignment with ISIS. According to the DOJ, Tawhedi plotted to provide material support to ISIS and obtained weapons, including AK-47 assault rifles and ammunition, to commit the attack.
Attorney General Merrick Garland praised the DOJ’s efforts in foiling the plot, stating, “We will continue to combat the ongoing threat that ISIS and its supporters pose to America’s national security.”
The criminal complaint reveals that Tawhedi entered the U.S. on a special immigrant visa in 2021 and was planning to liquidate his family’s assets and resettle them overseas before attempting the attack. Tawhedi’s arrest has reignited debates about the vetting of Afghan refugees, with some, including Donald Trump Jr., criticizing the Biden administration for allowing unvetted migrants into the country following the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
FBI Director Christopher Wray also commended the efforts to prevent the attack, stating, “Terrorism is still the FBI’s number one priority, and we will use every resource to protect the American people.” Tawhedi could face a combined maximum sentence of 35 years if convicted on all charges.
This man should never have been in our country. Period.
