Famous former NBA coach Stan Van Gundy has recently opened up to the public about the sudden death of his wife, nearly a year after her tragic passing. Former coach Stan Van Gundy revealed that his wife’s cause of death was suicide, as he also spoke on how he has been dealing with the grieving process.
On a recent episode of the South Beach Sessions sports podcast, Van Gundy sat down with sports media personality and show host Dan Le Batard, to discuss the sensitive topic. Van Gundy revealed to the world that his wife Kim’s death was a suicide, as she took her own life in August of 2023 at the age of 61. Van Gundy went on to detail his grieving process in which he stated that he does not care how long the process would take, being that the former Pelicans coach can’t imagine he will ever ‘get over that”. Coach Van Gundy and his wife Kim were married for 35 years at the time of her death. Van Gundy described their relationship by stating that for most of his adult life, his wife Kim was always by his side. Van Gundy went on to state that he had never imagined his life without Kim, as it is now a harsh reality the former NBA coach must face.
Van Gundy then went on to reveal to audiences that he has been regularly attending therapy. The former coach admitted that he still struggles with his personal feelings regarding the situation and has difficulty accepting the reality of his wife’s mental health issues.
Van Gundy and his wife Kim met in 1984 at Castleton University in Vermont, formerly known as Castleton State College, where Kim was a student at the time and Van Gundy was the basketball coach. Van Gundy stated that he now tries to live every day in a “way” that would make his late wife proud.
