Oregon Nurse Murder Suspect Makes First Appearance in Court

A 32-year-old nurse who had just gotten married went missing just a few days after coming home from her wedding, and now her neighbor is in jail on suspicion of killing Melissa Jubane.

Jubane was a nurse at Providence St. Vincent Hospital. In August she married her sweetheart Bryan Llantero in Hawaii, where he is from. When she returned to Oregon from her wedding, Jubane failed to show up at work in early September, prompting calls to police from friends and family.

The Beaverton Police Department discovered her body after three days of searching, but have declined to specify any details about where she was found or what may have happened. But inferences can be made from the charges now facing Jubane’s next-door neighbor, Jonathan Bryce Schubert. The 27-year-old was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping, plus second-degree abuse of a corpse. He’s in the Washington County Jail being held without bond.

Schubert had his first court appearance on September 9, appearing by video. He did not enter a plea.

Schubert was also a nurse, working at a different hospital—Providence Portland Medical Center—but within the same network Jubane worked for. He was employed there for just over a year from 2022 to 2023.

Beaverton police said they found Jubane’s body on Saturday, September 8, but gave no further details. They said they understand that the family and the community have an interest in learning the specifics of the crime, but that police needed to keep their cards close to their chest to “preserve the integrity of the investigation.”

Melissa Jubane’s family released a statement thanking the police, detectives, and all staff for “working diligently” to find out what happened to Melissa. They also thanked the public for the “love and support” they’ve received “from the entire nation.”

The Oregon Nurses Association also put out a written statement saying they were “devastated” by Jubane’s death, calling her an “extraordinary nurse” and remembering her as a member of the association.

Suspect Schubert is due in court again September 16. Local police are still investigating and ask anyone with information to call 503-526-2280.
