Secessionist Leader Claims Texas Coordinating With Other StatesĀ

A Texas secessionist has claimed his group is in talks with other states who likewise wish to break away from the US. Daniel Miller, leader of the Texas Nationalist Movement (TNM), said during a recent interview that there has been an uptick in secessionist activism in the Lone Star State and that his group is in touch with similar developing movements in Florida, Louisiana, California, New Hampshire, and Alaska.

The Texas Republican Party recently included demands for an independence referendum in its 2024 Legislative Priorities and Platform proposals, following the idea’s approval at a convention in San Antonio a month earlier. Prompting the escalation is growing tension between the Lone Star State and Washington, DC, over immigration and, to an increasing extent, education.

Mr. Miller said that independence movements in other states will accelerate if Washington continues pursuing paths that their residents oppose. He explained that the desire for independence is relatively new in Florida and Louisiana, but people there are ā€œalready expressing political and legal resistance to federal overreach.ā€

Voters and lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle have previously entertained secessionist ideas, most notably Republican firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene, who called for a ā€œnational divorceā€ last year. Taylor Greene made the remarks while lamenting the movement of ā€œbrainwashedā€ Californians to states such as Florida, saying they bring ā€œsick and disgusting woke cultureā€ along with them.

Polling in 2021 showed that around 40% of Democrats also think a ā€œnational divorceā€ is a good idea and would release their states from a Trump Presidency. A more recent poll, however, found only 23% support for secession among Texans, with 10% saying they were unsure. The result demonstrated a stark divide on the issue between Democrats and Republicans. Among Trump voters, 36% expressed support for independence, whereas just 6% of Biden voters said the same.

Texas was previously an independent nation. In 1836, it declared itself free of Mexican rule and joined the United States in 1845.
