Jack Grealish, star of England and Manchester City football, got a hefty citation for his heavy foot. The 28 year-old soccer legend has been ordered to pay a £666 fine as a penalty for being caught doing 44mph in a 30mph zone.
According to court proceedings, Grealish was caught in the act by a mobile speed camera positioned at Station Road, Wythall in Worcestershire last year on the morning of July 17. He was driving his Range Rover Sport at the time.
The Magistrates in the Worcester court also handed Grealish, who is a resident of the Barnt Green area in Worcester, the former captain of the Aston Villa team, a further penalty of five points to be attached to his driving record. Grealish did not appear in court himself, instead sending his barrister, John Dye, to represent him in the proceedings related to the citation.
In addition to the penalty points and the £666 speeding fine, Grealish was also required to pay court costs totaling £110, and a “victim surcharge” which came to £226. His total bill rang in at a whopping £1,042.
Nonetheless, he seems to have come away relatively unscathed compared to what could have happened. Grealish was originally charged with failing to truthfully assist police with identifying the driver of the vehicle. Fortunately for him, this charge was withdrawn.
The maximum penalty the court could have imposed for the offense was £1,000, but the court reduced it to £666 after Grealish’s barrister entered a guilty plea. Dye confirmed to the court that his client could afford the penalty. He also said that he had been instructed by his client to apologize to the court. Dye, on Grealish’s behalf, characterized the infraction as “a mistake,” and also conveyed his clients wish that the court would accept his word that Grealish intended no disrespect to the court by sending a barrister instead of appearing in person to answer the charges.
