Tragic Discovery Shocks Community
The quiet town of Cornelia, Georgia, was rocked by the disappearance and subsequent murder of Minelys “Mimi” Rodriguez-Ramirez, a 25-year-old fitness influencer and mother originally from Puerto Rico. Rodriguez-Ramirez vanished on October 22, 2024, after a visit to a local Walmart. Her remains were discovered near the store following an extensive search involving the FBI and K-9 units.
The victim’s fiancé, Julio Tovor, received an uncharacteristic text message from Rodriguez-Ramirez on the night of her disappearance.
“I am waiting for the brother to pick him up,” the message read, raising immediate concerns. Tovor later commented on the unusual nature of the text, stating, “It didn’t make sense. She doesn’t talk like that.”
Illegal Immigrant Charged
Authorities arrested Angel DeJesus Rivera-Sanchez, a 24-year-old man from Mexico, in connection with Rodriguez-Ramirez’s disappearance and death. Rivera-Sanchez was apprehended on October 28, 2024, near a bus station in Atlanta, Georgia. He has been charged with kidnapping and is expected to face murder charges as the investigation progresses.
“They have verified it through fingerprints and documents and different things, but they have come out and said that he is illegal,” Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell said.
The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed Rivera-Sanchez’s illegal status, adding fuel to the ongoing debate on immigration policies. The suspect is currently held without bond at the Habersham County Jail, with a bond hearing scheduled for November 20.
The tragic incident has reignited criticism of the Biden administration’s border policies. State senators John Albers and Steve Gooch have been vocal in their condemnation, drawing direct links between the murder and what they perceive as lax immigration enforcement.
“How many more lives must be lost due to the open-border policies in Washington, D.C.?” State Sen. John Albers asked.
